Enjoying our trip up from Lyttelton – stopped by some of boyf’s friends in Waipara – Mike and Claudia have a vineyard called Pyramid Valley, which they manage biodynamically.

Nice little video showing how they produce their wines at Pyramid Valley

My friend, Mike Moreu’s graphic novel starts today. He’s a superb cartoonist, so I’ve been looking forward to reading The Spirit Wood.
Update: 28th March… Okay it hasn’t quite started, as I found out today when I met up with Mike in a great pub (converted from a church) called the Freehouse in Nelson, New Zealand. But it’s starting soon, so bookmark the page and check back in about a week…

By fellow cartoonist, Royston Robertson:

I couldn’t agree more. You can read more about it on his blog.
I drew up this rough and then decided against it as it will be way out of date on publication. This is when it would be good to be a web-cartoonist, working on deadline.

This summer has been horrible. A strong La Niña system moved in and the drought was well and truly broken. It never rains but it pours and we had severe flooding in Queensland and parts of Victoria (even here, in the central city suburb of Elwood, Melbourne). I wrote this series shortly after and the original of one of these cartoons sold in the floodline auction run by the Aussie Cartoonists Association.

I went to the Penguin Symposium yesterday and learned a lot more about penguins. Like how St Kilda penguins eat mostly anchovies, whereas the ones at Phillip Island have a more varied diet. And how iron dust and magnets is now being trialled as a way to clean oil from penguins without harming the structure of their feathers (unlike detergent).
Earthcare is looking for committed volunteers (we had a huge number this year, but I would guess that two thirds of them were flaky and wouldn’t show up half the time) to look after the penguins on the breakwater. If you are in the St Kilda area, I highly recommend becoming a penguin volunteer. I can email details to anyone interested.
The Penguin Symposium will be happening in South Melbourne Community Hall this Sunday. No actual penguins will be coming, but lots of people will be talking about them. I’ll be doing a little presentation on penguins in cartoons.

Part of a Midge Bristol cartoon on Little Penguins
The first presentation starts from 11 am and the symposium will finish at 3 pm. Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided (so please RSVP to earthcarestkilda@gmail.com).
South Melbourne Community Hall is on the corner of Park St and Ferrars Place. There is ample free parking and trams number 1, 12 and 96 are nearby.
Hope to see you if you are in the area!
