The local council commissioned a series of videos about what individuals can do to help the environment and they are finally online. Yours truly was in a webisode about low impact living in a small flat.

I first visited Pittsburgh in 1991 and I liked it then, but it’s even better now. There are cool (no chain store) shopping/eating areas like The Strip and Southside and lots of bike lanes are going in. We happened to be there on World Environment Day and the boyf’s old buddy, Doug Millar introduced us to Lee Ferraro, the general manager at WYEP, which is noteworthy as the radio station is in one of the city’s greenest buildings.

Doug, Duncan and Lee in the studio at WYEP Pittsburgh

Much of the building used recycled (75% of the steel, recycled jeans as insulation…) or sustainable (wheatboard, fly-ash concrete) materials with low volatile organic compounds and a design that promotes a healthy working environment. The increased building costs were quickly offset by the low energy use of the building and it seems like a great place to work (you can open the windows, yay!)

It also plays great music.

This upcoming Sunday was inspired by Billie, our Jack Russell terrier, who gets up on the couch in the lounge when we go out. He doesn’t realise that the warm cushions give him away.Paris the Pomeranian goes indognito

One of the most fun things we did in Manhattan was go to the High-Line Park on the Lower West Side. Local residents banded together to stop an elevated rail track (last used in 1980) from being demolished. Instead they have transformed it into an elevated city oasis, with plantings, water features and beautiful design.

The park goes from about 12th St to 20th, but a big extension is planned

there are artworks like this coloured glass that represents the view over the Hudson

Keeping chickens is all the rage in urban gardens. It was recently approved in New York City and I guess that’s fine, provided people don’t keep roosters and everything is well-fenced. We lived next to a woman with chickens in New Zealand and the roosters would get us up waaaaaay before dawn, plus the chickens came into our garden and pecked through our veggies like feathered monsters.

Had a great time at the National Cartoonists Society annual shindig in Jersey City. Here are a few pictures.
