I recently scored a lovely little gig for a teaching magazine and I’m in the process of doing my second cartoon for them. The first two roughs were rejected and this one rightly so – on reflection, it would only appeal to those who were traumatised by their chemistry practical lab work like me. Those who remember that every test seemed to require production of a crystalline white solid instead of the murky brown liquid that was the actual result.

Fashion shenanigans

hipsterWorking on some strips for next month and enjoying having a dig at fashion. Even some of my most environmentally aware friends lose it when it comes to fashion and go consumer crazy.

Update 11th Feb: And it flooded today but people kept walking through

The tunnel from Flinders Street Station, Platform 1 has always enthralled me. First of all, it pops out by the waffle stand in Degraves Street, like some glorious secret passageway. Second, it has just sprouted a new coffee shop, which I will try, when I have my keepcup with me, as I didn’t want to take a disposable cup.

Third, it has eclectic exhibitions put on by the platform artists group. The last was on the station itself, but the current is on zines – hurrah!!

The exhibition helped me find the work of Pat Grant. Is this guy in the ACA? I hope so....

NB.There is a fab little zine store in the subterranean arcade and leafing through its contents is like being in a real life version of the internet, with crazy juxtapositions, useful info and a lot of random stuff.

Despite some blasts of heat, our garden has survived pretty well and we have harvested a lot of courgettes, beans, lettuce, potatoes, herbs and a singular beet and tomato!

Hoses are banned so we have to water by can from the rainwater tanks. As they run dry, we will only be able to water from 6am-8am on Saturdays and Tuesdays! Absurd, when market gardens use a lot more water.

Some time ago, I entered a little competition to have a comic strip blown up to billboard size and put up on the iconic Corner Hotel (a pub known for its live music) in Richmond, Melbourne.

I won the latest round and the strip will be up until 27th Feb.

I asked one of the many security guys milling about the entrances what he thought of the cartoon. “I like it,” he said, “the polar bear in the last panel reminds me of one of my boys – he’s built just like him”.

I also finally got to make good on a promise I made to Adam of The Eastern. I can’t remember why, but I said I’d put his band in one of my comic strips. They are playing in the background of panel 2.
