A beautiful day for brainstorming in Melbourne

A beautiful day for brainstorming in Melbourne

I like to think up ideas for Arctic Circle in several locations – cafes and  along Elwood Canal to the beach are two favourites, but I’ve just added a third – the State Library.

The La Trobe Reading Room

The La Trobe Reading Room

The La Trobe Reading Room is old school gorgeoous and even has desks that can be set to slope. The only problem is that it must be examination time and the normally quiet room has been inundated with twittering wittering students.

The boyfriend biked over to Seddon the other day. He had heard about a nice little wine store on twitter and spent about an hour there talking to the guy who runs it (Jeremy). Jeremy doesn’t want people to think his store is just fancy schmancy stuff, so he printed some great little cartoon postcards that demonstrate that perfectly. Got my attention (and normally I glaze over a little when the boyf goes on about wine).

The Story of Stuff

Oscar puts out the rubbish

Oscar puts out the rubbish

The Story of Stuff is a cute little animation explaining what happens to all the stuff we buy, consume and ultimately (often far too quickly) throw “away”.

The Story of Stuff

The Story of Stuff

Treehugger reports

The Story of Stuff is expanding. Or rather, it is splitting off into specialized areas. Leonard and crew wanted to respond to the many requests from viewers over the last two years to make films on specific topics. However, there were two things stopping Leonard from doing just that some time ago. First, Leonard points out that she doesn’t have that kind of specialized knowledge – she spent, literally, 20 years thinking about the issues that went into the original The Story of Stuff, and would need to tap the minds of experts in the various specialized areas people want to know more about. The other problem is facilitating the activist flame that is kindled up in viewers after watching the films. Her group just doesn’t have the resources to funnel people towards appropriate outlets.

Read the full article to see how The Story of Stuff is expanding to tap into viewers’ desire to act. And if you haven’t seen the animation, I recommend it: it’s great fun, as well as being informative.

Thursday was a last minute protest against the planned export of dirty brown coal to India (how can the Brumby government be going this and still put adverts in the paper about black balloons and reducing emissions?!).

Saturday was a day of global protest to demand action on climate change (International Day of Climate Action) and to urge that we target 350ppm as a safe level of carbon in the atmostphere.

The end of an Age

Got notification yesterday that The Age are canceling 3 of their 5 daily strips, including mine. Not sure what will remain, but looking at this Saturday’s paper, Wizard of Id survives.

Update: Wizard of Id and Non Sequitur will stay. Although NS is one of the cheapest strips available in Australia, we have been told that a panel decided the cuts on the basis of popularity.

At least it was the end of a storyline

If I could have one superpower it would be to know where everything is. That would mean I could know where Snooty is now (Snooty makes a guest appearance in today’s strip which is part of the Lost City series below). Snooty was the toy elephant I had as a little kid. I think I was car sick on him too many times and one day he never came back from the wash…
