Early this summer, we spent a couple of weeks driving along the northern coast of Spain as far as A Coruña. It’s a working town, lacking the glamour of San Sebastian, or Barcelona. However, it has great food and wine, a surf beach and a huge waterfront path. We walked it from the beach past the Roman lighthouse and down to the old town. The last part was lined with peach-coloured lampposts from the mid nineties, each of which had 4 ceramic (oops – enamel – thanks, Verónica!) works of art. They were all by the same artist, Julia Ares.
The only thing I could find out about her on the internet was this blog post by Verónica Blanco. According to the post, Ares made 1200 pieces for the lampposts. What a lot of work and a huge effort of creativity, as each one that I saw was different.
I wonder what she is doing now.
